It is foolish to believe that you will get something for nothing. If you want a well-bred Collie you must be prepared to do three things:

Research the breed

Research the breeder

Abandon the idea that you are "making a financial investment" from which you will ever profit.

It is my policy that all "newbies" to Collies that want me to mentor them must be willing to study books or other materials on history, health, grooming, genetics, structure, AKC rules, rescue, and sportsmanship. They are also strongly encouraged to join the local all-breed dog club if a Collie specialty club is not nearby. Novices learn by doing; and these are some of the most complete ways to research the Collie breed, as well as develop a sense of the commitment which is required
If you want instant recognition and success in the show ring, consult somebody else! My students don't get to the show ring or the whelping box without doing their homework. This is where it becomes important to research the breeder from whom they will make their initial purchase. When they know what they are looking for, and what they want to accomplish, they are ready to shop.

About Contracts:

Every puppy sold, regardless of whether it is a pet or a show prospect comes with a contract, which sets out requirements for both the buyer and the seller.

All Collies are companions to their owners. However, those deemed to be less likely to qualify in the conformation ring are considered "pet quality". They have the same pedigree as all the others in the litter but may not be used for breeding. All pets are required to be spayed or neutered. Registration papers are held back until the new owner produces a certificate from a veterinarian stating that the dog has been properly altered. Alteration is required between 6 and 12 months of age.

Show prospect puppies are just that: prospects. There is absolutely no way for any breeder to guarantee that a particular puppy will "turn out", much less become an "instant winner". We can only rely on what we know of our family of dogs and developmental experience.

A puppy from Heirlair Collies carries a guarantee of good health, sound temperament, open disclosure of any known problems of any kind, and a refund or replacement if a show prospect puppy does not develop adequate to the breed conformation ring by 18 months of age. The buyer is required to return the dog to me if, for any reason , they can no longer keep it or take care of it properly.

BE WARNED!!!!!!

I tolerate no excuses for sending one of my dogs to the pound!! Breeding quality animals may not be used to produce puppies for any commercial purpose. Further, any person found guilty of abuse or neglect may be subject to civil as well as criminal penalties-and I WILL pursue it! Failure to properly care for any Collie, including neglect of routine vaccinations and necessary preventatives such as heartworm, may also bring down my wrath.

So don't buy from me unless you can be a responsible owner.
